Ronald N. Huston
June 7, 1932 — Oct. 7, 2013
Ronald Nelson Huston was born in Long Beach, Calif., on June 7, 1932. He was a loving and compassionate family man with God’s gift of a beautiful singing voice. Always an optimist, his favorite mottos were “Life is good” and “I am a singer.” He passed peacefully at home on Oct. 7, 2013, from complications of Alzheimer’s.
Ronald attended El Dorado High School and graduated in 1950. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1951–1955. On June 20, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Ann Volz, at the Federated Church. He attended the University of California, Davis, and earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1959. Following graduation, he used his degree as a HJ Heinz Field buyer. In 1962 Ronald, Margaret and family returned to Placerville and began a long life of farming on their pear ranch in the Gold Hill area. While caring for the ranch and his family, he also served for 14 years as the manager for the Placerville Fruit Growers Association.
Ronald was a giving man with a smile that could brighten a room and a voice to fill your soul. He was a vital member of the Federated Church for 59 years, where he served as an usher, choir member and soloist. Throughout his lifetime he sang at countless weddings and funerals. As a young man he was active in DeMolay and earned his Life Badge in Boy Scouts. He volunteered and served in leadership roles for many organizations in El Dorado County and beyond. For 25 years he served as member and also president of Gold Trail School Board. He was a member and president of the Native Sons Chapter 9. He was also a 28-year member of the El Dorado County Farm Bureau, where he served as both president and director. For many years he was a leader in both 4-H and Cub Scouts. In addition, he was a member of the following organizations: Northwest Pear Commodity Board, California Canning Pear Association, Seniors in Retirement (SIRs), American Legion, director of Resource Conservation District, El Dorado County Agriculture Commission, and a director of the Placerville Fire Department in the Gold Hill area.
Ronald is survived by his best friend and devoted wife of 59-and-a-half years, Margaret; and six children, Mark Huston (Barbara), Marcie Schmitz (Bob), Matt Huston (Kari), Scott Huston (Monica), Brett Huston (Jolie) and Stacey Pittman (Robert); 15 grandchildren, Christine Bond (Michael), John, Jenna, Peter and Derek Schmitz, English, Gretchen and Heather Huston, Briana, Bryson and Brent Huston, Carly, Ryan and Katie Huston and Megan Pittman; and two great-grandchildren, Shelby and Conner Bond. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his loving family and myriad friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m., at the Federated Church, 1031 Thompson Way in Placerville. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Alzheimer’s Aid Society of Northern California, P.O. Box 60095, Sacramento, CA 95860-0995 and/or Federated Church.
