County Fire Must Get Own House in Order before Cal Fire will consider Proposal
About six months ago the EDCFPD sent an RFP to Cal Fire asking what it would cost it to run the district and at what level of service. It was one option the district was exploring in light of its financial shortfalls.
EDCFPD Board Chairman Mark Brunton expects Cal Fire to formally notify the district next week regarding the reasons for the RFP decline, but said before Cal Fire considers the request, the district needs to improve its financial status, reserves, contingency funds and fleet replacement reserve.
County Fire Chief Mike Hardy said the decision by Cal Fire was because of the “tight fiscal margins at EDCFPD.”
One person noted that Cal Fire is an expensive outsourced alternative because of the administrative overhead. He said, "They are not a viable option for an entity with financial issues. The answer is obvious, so man up and start the department overhaul. Flatten the structure, get younger and cheaper and build a realistic 5 year plan."
But the district will continue operating and building its reserves, he said, adding that, “We will do what we need to do to be sustainable on our own. It (the Cal Fire RFP) was just an option, but nothing we banked on. We’re tightening our belt, have made cuts and are continuing to move forward. We expect to save money this fiscal year and next.”
Mark Darnell said there is no way they can stay afloat without closing one of there ridiculously slow stations and cutting staff. If Cal Fire said no, it was for a big reason.
