Here are some responses:
Kari Bridges Guthrie Smith Flat?
Angi Simpson Oh My, got me, can't wait for you to reveal...
Gay Hybertsen The car looks like the 20's.
Dan Musick ?????? Upper Broadway ?????????
Kari Bridges Guthrie Oh wait- I'm thinking it's under the railway bridge (that's now the walking trail) on Hwy 49?
J David Gibson I blew the picture up 400% and you can make out what appear to be railroad tracks about a quarter of the way up on the right had side of the picture. By that I would say this is somewhere on the west end of main street, may be Forni road.
Josh Hogan Based on the sign above I would guess the picture was taking facing east.
J David Gibson I think you are right Josh, that blows my theory all to pieces.
Josh Hogan The hillside resembles the area where lower main and forni intersect.
Josh Hogan I think it more confirms your theory
J David Gibson But if the picture is taken facing east the tracks are on the wrong side.
Josh Hogan I'm looking at it like I'm standing on 50 facing east and looking to my right twords main/forni. The track paralled main/forni on the south side of 50.
Josh Hogan Of course we could be wrong but it sure resembles that area
J David Gibson In the 60 the tracks were on the south side of 50, but if you look at the earlier pictures the tracks are on the north of 50.
Josh Hogan Wow see there's something I wasn't aware of. But it does resemble that area. Hope this gets identified.
James Cornelius New hampshire?
James Cornelius No, but really, i was thinking it looked like cedar road.
Crystal Newton I have absolutely NO idea!
Christine Starr Looks like Forni & Main according to te hillside on the right side of the photo.... I know I have seen that pillar before.
Cork Quasne It would be correct in the mid Highway Fifty area. Forne Road realigned to the Mid Highway Fifty area. The cement remnants above Placerville drive coming into lower main. That would put the direction east and with the railroad tracks in the correct orientation But the concrete tower? The problem with that is I've been on the old concrete road and it doesn't look like this road way. Someone went through the guard rail. Photo Shopped it also. I guess I get fired from CSI.
Celeste Purviance Rarick By the Druid Monument, main st.
Robert Douglas It look like up the road on broadway
Keith Lander Looks like a main entrance to the town. That banner would be most likely be placed at the city limits or near on the most heavily traveled road into town. Just a theory.
Cindy Abrahams Druid monument?
Wendy Vandendungenbille-Bracht What a beautiful picture!
Roman Lucero For I red just before it turns into main st.
Keith Hammonds I think the car is heading west based on the sign, and maybe Hangtown Creek is on his right? Could be right around what is now the upper end of Placerville Drive.
Dale Danz I was thinking the Druid monument on Cedar Ravine and Main St.
Doug Noble It would be great to find the concrete pillar in another picture or actually find it. It appears the sun is behind the car and to the left from what shadows there are.
Judy Hopkins I don't think it's the Druid Monument, which is round and not that tall. This looks like a square shaped pillar. Druid Monument was dedicated in 1926. I'm thinking lower Main area. Is the sign attached to the pillar and what else?
Keith Hammonds Fun stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Tracy Pitts I'm dying to know....
Trish Fernandez i believe this is on the old road that used to connect what is now placerville drive to main street, under the RR bridge. I guess it may have been hwy 50 back then but not sure. it was 40 for a while; perhaps it is and this is one of the segments of the Lincoln Highway - can't tell if the road bed is a series of concrete slabs or not. . .
Trish Fernandez wait, the rr is off in the distance. maybe this is a footing for a canal overhead that would be the reason Canal St. is so called. Definitely believe this is facing SE and now I'm thinking it is in a location that would either have been removed by the 1960s constructed freeway or it is a segment you can still see on the north side of 50/placerville drive. i've seen this photo before at the museum but i don't remember them identifying the location . . .
J David Gibson This is one of the things I like about this site, if we keep investigating and talking we will be able to figure it out. Their has been so much new information given in these texts that I had never heard about Placerville before. Keep it coming.
Keith Hammonds Were you driving the car in this photo Doug Noble? Just kidding! I'm pretty sure you and I are from the same era!
Dave Scheuner That might be Texas hill in the background. I am thinking upper broadway smith flat area. Old highway 50. But the sign is welcoming travelers so it should be on the west end of town on the old highway with a hill and a creek.....mystery.
Will Little Im Thinking Newtown road area as it would look so different without the development of h)
