Is the Mountain Democrat Newspaper playing games with advertisers?
A writer pointed out that the paper blocks ads from competitors.
The car show in Pollock Pines just got a little hotter as the local newspaper offends people with what some call, "petty, childish act."
Although not direct rivals, the Mt Democrat traditional newspaper and the Windfall advertising newspaper are secondary competitors as they do compete for the same advertisers. It is a well known secret that the Mt Democrat has been struggling for years after losing half of their subscribers and much of their advertising revenue. Most newspapers in the U.S. are also struggling to adapt to new media propagated by the Internet. Earlier this year, in order to save on overhead, the paper moved out of downtown for the first time in its history.
Even with the tough times for local papers, it has taken many by surprised at the levels the Mt Democrat will go to quash even secondary competitors. A few years ago the Democrat lost its contract for the Fair to the Windfall. Ever since that the Democrat has been flagrant in their effort to downplay and marginalize the Windfall.
The most recent act was in promoting the M.O.R.E. Car Show and Chili Cook-off in Pollock Pines. Everybody loves what M.O.R.E. does and major event sponsors include the Pollock Pines Chamber, Wells Fargo Bank, El Dorado Disposal, the Mt Democrat, and the Windfall. In event ads for the event in the Windfall, all major sponsors are listed, but in the Mt Democrat ads for the same event, the Windfall sponsorship is conspicuously missing.
A writer wrote this about the paper's lowbrow rivalry:
"Apparently this is not the first time they have done this, but what kind of childish BS is this?
I used to have some respect for them as a newspaper, but after this petty, childish act, that is all gone..."
