Lake in the Sky Air Show CANCELED this Weekend
Saturday's 24th annual Lake in the Sky Airshow in South Lake Tahoe has been canceled because of poor air quality caused by two large wildfires outside the Tahoe basin.
Also canceled are Sunday's Young Eagles Flights, said Tracy Franklin, the city's public information officer, in a news release.
Dave Johnston, El Dorado County's air pollution control officer, has advised that visibility has been reduced to one mile and that air-quality conditions are at an "unhealthy" rating, Franklin said.
However, a preshow party -- a free event that's open to the public -- will still take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Flight Deck Restaurant, 1901 Airport Road.
Special guest speaker World War II Triple Ace "Bud" Anderson is still confirmed, Franklin said, as well as Vietnam fighter pilots Pete "Viper" Pettigrew and Mike "Wizard" McCabe. The party will also feature live music and food specials.
Event’ surrounding this year’s air show will actually span three days, starting with a pre-flight party beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Flight Deck restaurant at Lake Tahoe Airport. Triple Ace “Bud” Anderson will be a special guest speaker along with two Vietnam War fighter pilots, according to a statement from the city.
The air show will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The show includes aerobatic performances by pilots including Bill Cornick, Jon Melby and Spencer Suderman.
“Additionally, there will be sky divers, kids’ activities, War Birds, classic car show, police dog K9 demonstration, bomb robot, helicopters, chili cook off, food court, beer and wine garden, fire trucks, fly-bys, tons of aerial performers, and much more,” according to the statement.
Free Young Eagles flights for kids interested in aviation are scheduled for Sunday with sign ups for the flights on Saturday.
Gates open to the public at 8 a.m. Saturday with a pancake breakfast available until 9:30 a.m. Aerial performances begin with skydiving at 9:30 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
Free transportation will be provided from the South Y Transit Center to Lake Tahoe Airport. For additional information, call 530-208-9901 or visit www.lakeinthskyairshow.com.
