Controversial billboard for bar echoes brothel
CAMINO, CA (KCRA/CNN) - Two billboards continues to garner reactions from people driving to and from Lake Tahoe along Highway 50.
This billboard advertises the Bunny Ranch Bar in Nevada - an establishment owned by the same person who owns a legal Nevada brothel just outside Carson City by a similar name: the Moonlite Bunny Ranch, a brothel that in El Dorado County, where these billboards are located, would be considered illegal.
"You know, I was shocked. I was really astonished," Nou Eddings said. She is a mother who drove her kids past these billboards on her way to school. She immediately thought it was the advertisement for a brothel.
Eddings and others expressed their concerns to county supervisors several weeks ago in hopes that county leaders would force the signs to come down.
County officials said they didn't want to say anything on camera about this billboard for fear it could be just a publicity stunt.
Publicity or not, Dennis Hof, the owner of the both the Bunny Ranch Bar and the nearby brothel, told me his billboards were not advertising prostitution nor his brothel - just his bar and restaurant, but because of perception, he agreed to take down the billboard closest to Placerville.
One closer to Echo Summit remains.
"... And so, I think when they see the Bunny Ranch Bar, they're assuming it's the brothel, and you know what happens when you assume," Hof said.
To that, this mother had a message for the man behind these billboards.
"I think he thinks we're stupid; seriously, we're not stupid," Eddings said.
