The Taxpayers Association of El Dorado County Request Repeal the $150 Fire Prevention Fee
The Honorable Felipe Fuentes, Chair Assembly Appropriations Committee State Capitol, Room 2114 Sacramento, California 95814
Dear Assembly Member Fuentes:
The Taxpayers Association of El Dorado County unanimously supports passage of Assembly Bill 1506 which will repeal the $150 fire prevention fee in State Responsibility Areas.
El Dorado County has over 60,000 dwelling units that are provided fire prevention and protection from local fire districts, all of which would inappropriately be subject to this state fire fee. These districts have fire stations strategically located through rural areas in order to provide the rapid response. The services are funded through the fire districts' share of the local property tax. In some cases, residents have assessed themselves an additional fee to support the capability of local fire districts.
Since the public purposes for CalFire services are for the protection of timber resources, wildlife habitat, and most importantly the quality and quantity of the state's surface waters; these are benefits to all Californians and are appropriately the responsibility of all taxpayers. The suggestion that it is appropriate to tax structures in the rural region to assure quality waters to be sent to urban and agricultural users in other areas of the state is unacceptable.
As such, this state fire fee unjustly imposes a double fire service fee on property owners; despite the fact that CalFire cannot be a first responder to fires and emergency incidents in most of the rural areas of El Dorado County.
We therefore request passage of AB 1506.
Ellen Day, President
Taxpayers Association of El Dorado County
