Somerset Residents Die in Car Accident in Delta
Update: Douglas Schaeffer, 68, and his wife, Colleen Schaeffer, 56, died when their SUV apparently drifted off Highway 4 west of Old River Bridge and flipped over into an irrigation canal, authorities said. Both were residents of Somerset, in El Dorado County.
A man and a woman died after their SUV apparently drifted off Highway 4 west of the Old River Bridge and flipped over into an irrigation canal just before 10 a.m. Monday, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Both the man, 68, driving a 2002 silver Toyota 4Runner, and his female passenger, 56, were from Somerset, in El Dorado County, and were pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP did not know their relationship to one another. Their names are being withheld until family members can be notified.
The 4Runner was traveling east at about 55 mph on Highway 4 just east of Victoria Island Farms when, for unknown reasons, it drifted off the north edge of the roadway, flipped and landed upside down in a ditch that held about 3 feet of water, according to the CHP.
Among the emergency units responding to the rural Delta incident, the Stockton Fire Department sent its water rescue team, which recovered the victims from the wreckage, Chief's Operator Matt Harris said.
The causes of death remain to be determined. Both occupants were wearing seat belts, CHP Officer Adam Shelton said.
