RESCUE, Calif. (KCRA) —A reward is being offered for information about a horse that was recently found slaughtered in an El Dorado County cemetery.Trumpet the horse was killed on Jan. 30.
Flowers and candles sit outside the Jay Hawk Cemetery in the community of Rescue, beneath a reward poster featuring a photograph of a horse named Trumpet.
Jeff Lewis, who lives near the cemetery, pointed Tuesday to hoof prints in the ground between the graves.
Lewis said horse hair was found on an iron fence and blood was splattered on at least one gravestone.
Lewis told KCRA 3 that when he arrived at the cemetery the next day, a friend showed him the horse's covered remains.
"(From) what he told me, I really didn't care to go take a look at it, so that was enough for me," said Lewis.
According to a reward notice posted at the Rescue post office, Trumpet was a 35-year-old gelding.
The poster said the horse was killed by "unknown brutal acts" between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 30.
"That scares me," said resident Lorena Lueras, who wondered if the horse's killer might move on to human victims.
"That might not satisfy the person that did this," said Lueras.
