SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- A high-tech device is being used to steal credit card information at gas stations in South Lake Tahoe.
Multiple people who have purchased gas at Safeway in South Lake Tahoe might be victims of credit card fraud. Police say credit information had been stolen from multiple customers by a "skimmer."
The device allows the thief to capture a customer's credit and debit information including the pin number with each card swipe.
"Skimmers" are not easily detected and there isn't much consumers can do to prevent this sort of identity theft.
Police confirm that there are no longer any skimming devices at any of the Safeway gas pumps.
Officers do encourage anyone who used a credit or debit card to purchase fuel from the Safeway station gas pumps this month to monitor their credit statements for fraudulent activity by identity theft.
If you have any information about the suspect or if you have been a victim of this type of fraud please call the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at 530-542-6100.
