Vicki Barber will retire at the end of June, after 30 years with the El Dorado County Office of Education, according to a statement released on Tuesday afternoon.
"It has truly been my honor and pleasure to serve the children, families, school districts, and communities through the El Dorado County Office of Education," said Barber in the statement. ".. I'm so appreciative of the support that public education has received in this county and have deep gratitude for the dedicated and passionate educators who deliver such outstanding service to our students and families every day."
Barber has been elected to five terms as El Dorado County superintendent of schools - starting in 1994. She began working at the county Office of Education in July 1983 as the director of special education. She was promoted to assistant superintendent in 1984 and became deputy superintendent in 1990.
Jeremy Meyers, deputy superintendent, will serve as the county superintendent until 2014, when the position will be put on the ballot.
