SPOTLIGHT WINERY - Colibri Ridge Winery & Vineyard
At 2700 feet, Colibri Ridge winery is one of the higher altitude wineries in Fair Play producing high quality, small batch wines. John Alexander is the owner/winemaker at Colibri and has been producing wine on his hillside winery since 2001. With a tasting room located inside his barrel room, you get to taste literally among the wines of the future!
Although there are many wines to enjoy at Colibri Ridge, there are four fortified wines that always seem to get a lot of attention. John believes he has crafted a style of port to suit all tastes. The very unique white ports, one made from Chardonnay and the other from Viognier are the most popular. These wines are well balanced and not overly sweet, nor overly fortified, and both finish soft and mellow. He suggested pairing them with cheesecake. The real attention grabber is the 2006 Beija Flor Tradicional made with four traditional Portuguese varietals. This wine is well balanced and elegant, and would pair well with a medium bodied cigar, some decadent chocolate dessert or a rich nutty blue cheese.
And speaking of pairing Colibri Ridge wines with food, don't miss the upcoming wine and food pairing at the Sierra Banquet Center located in Camino, CA on Saturday, January 26. This 5-course dinner will feature 5 Colibri Ridge wines, served with Stuffed Endive, a Greek Salad, South of the Border Prawns, Elk Tri-tip in a Wild Berry Sauce and Chocolate Mousse for dessert. All for only $45. Jon says the 2006 Tempranillo will be served with the Elk Tri-tip.
John mentioned the Tempranillo being served at the dinner and the 2012 harvest was brought to mind. He is super excited about the 2012 Tempranillo and said it was the best fruit he has ever seen! Note to self – stop by Colibri Ridge in 2018 to taste the Tempranillo to see what he is talking about! Right now however, you can stop by the tasting room to sample three new releases. The 2006 Mourvedre, 2007 Barbera and the 2007 Primitivo along with all the other favorites including the 2006 Rufous Red! Colibri Ridge Winery is open Friday through Sunday, 11am – 5pm so be sure to stop by on your next visit to Fair Play. www.colibriridge.com or call (800) 620-7255.
