Lake Tahoe regulators have approved a sweeping plan a decade in the making that will govern development around the scenic Sierra lake straddling the Nevada-California line and give more control to local governments.
While business interests hail the new regional plan as long overdue, some environmental advocates claim it mangles environmental protections by allowing denser development.
Others see it as a necessary compromise.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency governing board approved the plan Wednesday.
The regional plan hasn’t been updated since 1987. That was one reason Nevada lawmakers last year approved a bill paving the way for Nevada to pull out of a 40-year compact with California and the federal government over how the Tahoe Basin is manage.
The Nevada Legislature convenes in February and could reconsider that move.
