Volunteers in Placerville on Sunday were holding a toy drive for Toys For Tots.
Organizers said the drive is necessary because their holiday parade was canceled due to last weekend's rain, which hurt collection efforts.
The program serves more than 5,000 families in El Dorado County and hopes to collect two toys for every child in need this Christmas.
Thousands of toys have been collected, but the distribution is next weekend and 8,000 toys are still needed.
Organizer Sue Henderson said she is heartbroken to think that some kids may go without gifts this year.
Ron Thompson with Thomspons Auto dropped off 1,500 toys he helped collect on Sunday.
Volunteers were at the Bell Tower on Main Street in Placerville on Sunday collecting new unwrapped toys from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Organizers said many families were asking for help this year.
Transformers, wooden building blocks, and large education toys are on the wish list of many families.
