The Highway 50 Christmas Trees are once again decorated and lighted signaling the beginning of the Christmas Season. They are all unique to their particular cause or organization. This is a display we all look forward to and enjoy as well as making a statement to passers-by on their way to the mountains.
As can be expected this time of year, Mother Nature, right on time brought the rain and wind that decorators have become accustomed to each year. Fortunately, there is the parking structure under which to do the tedious zip-tying of all ornaments. They must be secure to hold up under severe weather conditions. There was no shortage of enthusiasm as several groups worked that chilly morning to make their tree ready for display.
Let me tell you about one of these trees. It is the Blue Spruce, fourth from the Caboose decorated and sponsored by the El Dorado Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The DAR is a lineage organization in which all members have a family line reaching back to a patriot of the American Revolution, either a soldier or family member who aided in the fight for American Independence during the American Revolutionary War.
Member Kimberly McCarthy and husband Jim are the driving force behind the theme of this tree and for the past several years have taken the lead in the decoration. This year they upgraded the lighting to twinkling LED white lights, added an Angel tree topper and the American flag. New this year, Kimberly is honoring 58 patriots of the Revolutionary War by inscribing their names on individual ornaments. Our young men and women of today who are serving so far from home during this Christmas Season risking their lives for our freedom and liberty are much like those men of 1776 who joined the struggle for our independence. This tree, adorned in red, white and blue honors all our soldiers and veterans, past and present.
A big “Thank You” to the Placerville Chamber of Commerce for organizing this event each Christmas Season.
