...multiple storms this week will bring significant amounts
of precipitation to the region...
Three storms through
friday night will impact interior northern california. the first storm is
moving into the region today and will bring strong winds with the frontal
passage today. this first storm will bring a period of heavy rain to the
valley and foothills with significant snowfall over the higher elevations.
the winds will likely cause some downed trees and tree limbs that will
also lead to some power outages.
The second storm will move into
the interior on thursday and thursday night to bring another round of wet
and windy weather for the interior and more snow for the higher
elevations. this storm will be warmer than the first one with higher snow
levels. the storm is not expected to have as much rainfall as the first
one but is expected to bring significant snow to the higher elevations
and wet heavy snow near the passes of i-80 and us-50. a third storm
will move into the interior late friday and friday night. while this storm
may not bring as much precipitation as the first couple of storms it will
be a much colder system and will lower snow levels into the foothills.
behind the front cold unstable air will remain over the interior to
produce showers and thunderstorms through the weekend. in addition to the
hazardous travel due to the snow the low snow levels may result in
some power outages in the foothills.
Potential total rainfall
amounts through this weekend will range from 2 to 4 inches in the central
valley with the higher totals over the north and eastern sides of the
valley....to 6 to 12 inches of rainfall for the foothills and mountains
with the higher amounts expected over favored southwest facing slopes.
locally higher amounts will be possible in both the mountains and
foothills. because we have had a very dry winter so far small riers and creeks
are running very low and are expected to handle the rainfall amounts
expected this week. however...a few of the smaller creeks that typically
have problems when there is a lot of rain may experience some minor
overflow and the small rivers and creeks are expect to see a rise in the
water levels...especially in the foothills. during periods of heavy
rainfall ponding of water on roadways is expected along with possible
flooding of the typical low lying spots.
Very heavy amounts
of snowfall is expected over the higher elevations this week with delays and
road closers likely at times over the higher mountain passes of the sierra
nevada. in addition while the intensity in snowfall will likely decrease
at times this week there is not expected to be much of a break for
the western slopes of the sierra nevada. 6 to 8 feet of snow may fall
above 8000 feet through this weekend.
