On July 23 my 89-year-old mom parked in the cement city garage. She was slightly (inches) over the white line into the next parking space (It was not handicapped.) She was ticketed 9-4-2(D) as a municipal infraction and was disgusted, but never contested the ticket.
We went to pay the ticket twice. Once the information wasn’t available yet. The second time was the Monday after she received a notice to appear in court the day before the notice was dated. the amount of the parking fine was $465.
The clerk at the window informed my mom (sympathetically) that she’s have to appear in traffic court before a judge if she was questioning the amount of the fine.
Upon duly going back and appearing before the court we were informed by the judge that the municipal fee was $465. He looked at her spotless record and at the infraction amount, thought it “excessive” and dropped it to $200 — for a parking ticket.
Couple of notes – At Raley’s parking lot the fee for parking in a handicapped parking space is $350. My son received a ticket for parking on the wrong side of the street to be swept. His fee was $75 (in the Bay Area).
No one we’ve spoken to can believe this story, so we think you should know. Everyone agrees that it’s outrageous, unfair, ridiculous and, for crying out loud, even un-American.
Who’s responsible? Let’s find out. Thanks for you time and be really careful how you park. Are we still a friendly little town?
