Camp project organizer Ron Sachs, of JJS Ministries, said Thursday he is very proud of how camp residents are succeeding.
The camp is located about 1.5 miles east of downtown Placerville, on donated private land.
The fenced site was carved out along a hillside, but by volunteers with shovels and a bulldozer.
About 30 people are living in tents pitched along pathways covered in wood bark.
When KCRA 3 visited Thursday evening, the camp appeared surprisingly neat and well-organized, considering it sits on a dirt-covered hillside.
There are donated portable toilets, washing stations and a common area with picnic tables and outdoor grills.
Organizers say local churches have provided most everything, including garbage cans, fly traps, drinking water and other supplies.
Campers must register, go through a screening process and follow strict rules that prohibit drugs and alcohol...
