UPDATE: The search for Linnea Lomax ends on a tradic note. A search team thrashing through a dense wooded area along the American River near Glenn Hall Park discovered the remains of a woman shortly after 10 a.m. Friday.
Late Friday the coroner's office issued a statement saying that the body had been identified as that of Lomax. "The cause and manner of death are under investigation, however, foul play does not appear to be a factor at this point of the investigation," Coroner Greg Wyatt said in the statement.
The family also issued a statement saying they had "received confirmation tonight that the deceased person found by the American River this morning is their daughter Linnea Lomax … "
The family indicated that they would plan services and a public statement later, but the announcement appeared to bring to an end the massive effort to find Lomax. The family asked for privacy Friday and thanked the multitudes of people who had helped search for their daughter.
"Arrangements for a celebration of life service are being made and details will be made public," the family statement said.
Linnea Lomax's parents eventually left the American River area to be with their other children. But Dennis said friends and volunteers – who had come from as far away as North Carolina and Alabama – struggled with a range of emotions Friday afternoon.
"If this is her, obviously no one wants that outcome, but the other side to that is that everyone has been working very hard and very diligently (for closure)," he said. "No parent wants to continue to go through this limbo period."
This statement is from the official search website:
Wonderful volunteers. We are grieved to report that we have just received confirmation that our search for Linnea has ended in sorrow. She has gone to be with her Lord. Yet in our sorrow we do not despair, knowing we will see her again one day. Arrangements for a Celebration of Life service are being made and details will follow. More information will be released as her family deems appropriate. In the meantime, please allow them privacy as they mourn, and please continue to hold them up in prayer. “13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep...18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 English Standard Version (ESV)
Earlier story:A volunteer search party looking for a missing UC Davis student found a body along the American River and notified police this morning, sparking an investigation into whether the body is that of Linnea Lomax.
Sacramento police told The Bee that the group of searchers found the body at 10:18 a.m. along the river in the vicinity of Glenn Hall Park in the River Park neighborhood near Sacramento State -- not far from where Lomax walked away from a mental health appointment more than two months ago.
Many searches were mounted for Lomax, including one that started today and was scheduled to continue through the weekend.
The initial search began for the young woman began the afternoon of June 26, when her parents, Craig Lomax and his wife, Marianne, went to pick up Linnea from an outpatient facility on Howe Avenue, only to find she had apparently left earlier that day.
According to her parents, the teen suffered a breakdown while studying for finals at the University of California, Davis.
During 10 days of inpatient therapy, they said, she disagreed with doctors' initial diagnoses of anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders and refused some of the medications they prescribed. Hours into her first day of outpatient counseling, she disappeared.
Friends and family describe Linnea Lomax as a smart, caring and driven young woman. One friend called her a "sunflower, " another "vibrant."
In an interview shortly after her disappearance, Craig Lomax said his eldest daughter was an incredibly hard worker who has always strived to be the best in every aspect of her life: school, sports, faith, volunteer work.
But he believed it was that same drive that might have pushed her to a dark place.
