Truckee has emerged as one of the region’s home bases for stand-up paddleboarders, who can usually be found skimming the waters of Donner Lake.
The sport has its own Tahoe-area subculture — a blend of fitness seekers who enjoy bonding with nature and protecting the environment.
As a reflection of the sport’s growth, the Truckee Police Department this summer launched the Adventure Recreation Community team, which includes officers patrolling the lake on stand-up paddleboards.
Truckee police could not find any other law enforcement agencies that use stand-up paddleboards as a police enforcement tool.
Community outreach and positive interactions with residents and tourists are the goal of the the Adventure Recreation Community team, Capt. Robert Leftwich said.
Officers rotate their daily patrols between the paddleboards, mountain bikes and the department’s boat.
