Soroptimist Recognize Katy Peek
Soroptimist International of Placerville, a volunteer organization for business and professional women, presented its Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women to Kathleen “Katy” Watt Peek, of Placerville, at its recent annual awards dinner.
The Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women honors ordinary women, who through their professional or personal activities, make extraordinary efforts on behalf of women and girls. It also provides a $1,000 award, which the recipient can donate to the charity of her choice.
Peek has been part of philanthropic giving most of her life.
In 1990, she was the key leader in bringing the entire community of El Dorado together to create The El Dorado Community Foundation. The foundation now administers approximately 160 funds that address the needs of the county — from youth, to homelessness, to older adult services and families in crisis.
Peek has selected to donate her $1,000 award to the Women’s Fund at the El Dorado Community Foundation, a fund that supports programs and services that benefit the neighbors and community of El Dorado County.
To date, the fund touts a donor base of more than 250 women who empower each other and who have become proud and excited philanthropists.
The Ruby Award pays tribute to Soroptimist’s very first president, Ruby Lee Minar. A ruby is also a deep red gemstone associated with wisdom, importance, vitality, strength, vivacity, power and love: all words embodying the strong and compassionate women who become Soroptimist award recipients.
With the record of a community leader such as Peek, the Soroptimist International Club of Placerville is proud to honor her with the prestigious Ruby Award.
Soroptimist International of Placerville part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pa., is a cause-related philanthropic federation of clubs improving the lives of women and girls through social and economic empowerment.
With almost 95,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories, its major program, the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards, provides cash grants for women seeking to improve their lives with the help of additional education and training.
