The Arts Building Gallery, 808 Lincoln Way in Auburn, presents the Pastel Society of the West Coast’s Juried Membership Show from Tuesday, Aug. 7 through Saturday, Sept. 29. Held every other year, this year’s show includes 95 paintings by 59 pastel artists from around the West.
The juror for the show is Dug Waggoner. A Sacramento-born California native, Waggoner’s natural drawing ability came early to him. Throughout his secondary schooling the opportunity to use that skill was never far away including being selected staff artist for his high school newspaper.
He sharpened and distilled his skills in the intense environment at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Graduating from there opened the door to a career in advertising design and illustration.
Today, his drawing and painting skills have focused his eye in realizing his goal of producing fine art watercolor and pastel paintings.
Waggoner is a distinguished pastelist with the Pastel Society of the West Coast.
To celebrate the art of pastel, a number of special events, demonstrations and receptions will be offered during the exhibit. The opening reception for the show will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9 during the Auburn Art Walk.
On Saturday, Sept. 8, Richard McKinley will be presented with the Pastel Society of the West Coast’s Pastel Laureate Award at 1 p.m., followed by “A Conversation with Richard McKinley.”
McKinley has been a professional artist for 38 years and has more than 35 years of teaching experience. He writes a weekly blog for the Pastel Journal and has received many important recognitions for his work.
