According to court documents, on March 26, 2012, Rohner forcibly broke into the U.S. Post Office at 5221 Deer Valley Road in Rescue and stole mail from the registered mail bags. On December 3, 2011, Rohner broke into a contract mail carrier truck and stole registered mail bags for El Dorado, Diamond Springs and Shingle Springs post offices. Rohner stole in excess of $14,278.
Steven Joseph Rohner, 55, of North Highlands, pleaded guilty today to burglary of a U.S. Post Office and theft of U.S. Mail, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.
This case is the product of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service with the assistance of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department. Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez is prosecuting the case.
Rohner is scheduled for sentencing on October 30, 2012 by U.S. District Judge John A. Mendez. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $500,000 fine, and restitution. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory sentencing factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
